Looking back on your time as a Goodnight Scholar, what moment or experience had the biggest impact on your growth?
Some of the most impactful experiences I had as a Goodnight Scholar were the trips I took through the program. Whether it was RISE, Senior retreat, or others. The cultural excursions, or service-focused travel, exposed me to new perspectives and challenged me to think beyond the classroom. Being in new environments with fellow scholars fostered deep conversations, lasting friendships, and a stronger sense of curiosity. Those experiences pushed me to grow as a learner, leader, and community member. They were more than just trips, they were pivotal moments that shaped how I see the world and my place in it.
2. How has being part of the Goodnight Scholars community shaped your academic and personal journey at NC State?
The Goodnight community gave me a strong support system that encouraged me to pursue challenging opportunities, whether that was research, leadership roles, or service projects. Knowing I had peers, mentors, and pro-staff who believed in my potential gave me the confidence to aim higher. Personally, the emphasis on humility and gratitude kept me grounded and mindful of the bigger picture.
3. What’s a piece of advice you would give to incoming Goodnight Scholars just starting their time at NC State?
Say yes to opportunities, especially the ones that scare you a little. Whether it’s applying for a leadership role, joining a new club, or attending a Goodnight event where you don’t know anyone, those moments often lead to the most growth. And don’t be afraid to ask for help!!! This community is here to lift each other up.
4. In what ways have you given back to the Goodnight community or the broader NC State campus during your time here?
I served as a mentor for Goodnight Scholars and the Pre-Vet community, which was incredibly rewarding. Beyond the program, I volunteered with a local church, assisting in distributing food and supplies to families in need. I also participated in mobile veterinary clinics, providing essential care to rural communities.
5. What are your next steps after graduation, and how do you see the values of the Goodnight Scholarship guiding you in that path?
After graduation, I will begin the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program at NCSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine. I aim to specialize in large animal internal surgery and wildlife conservation. The Goodnight Scholarship taught me the importance of using my skills to serve others and contribute to something greater than myself. I plan to stay engaged in mentorship and community service, no matter where my career takes me.
