COVID-19 IMPACT

Chandra

I have been working remotely with NC Agricultural and Technical University in their Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program on data science and analytics since June 2020.

My project has entailed creating a clustering analysis of U.S. states and territories based on COVID-19 data. Some relevant features include confirmed cases, recovered cases, deaths, hospitalizations, and testing rate per 100,000 persons. The goal of this project is to use machine learning to group states and territories into clusters (regions) based on COVID-19 feature similarity. In concluding the study, we would provide resource recommendations to regions based on the incidence of certain features in clusters.

During spring break, I joined a diagnostic company called BioMedomics to help with their packaging efforts and to help them assemble test kits for distribution.

They quickly realized that they needed even more help, and I had the opportunity to bring on some of my connections to work with me. I was responsible for manufacturing and customer relations — anything ranging from replying to email inquiries, creating invoices, and mailing test kits to our customers. I identified a need for a liaison between leadership and the crew in charge of manufacturing. I stepped up to the plate and began coordinating manufacturing efforts and taking it upon myself to handle everything to relieve pressure from the full-time employees. At the peak, I managed a team of around 16 to make COVID-19 test kits. It felt fulfilling to know that my team and I were making a genuine impact on the fight against COVID-19 during the pandemic.

Filtering facepiece respirators such as the N95 are serving as critical PPE responsible for reducing the spread of COVID-19. Yet, the discomfort and shortages of these fitted respirators reveal the need for further development.

My research project with the NC State Department of Forest Materials seeks to develop a more comfortable, sustainable, cellulose-based face mask equivalent to the N95 by evaluating the protection, performance, ergonomics, production, price, supply, and sustainability (PPEPPSS) of the N95 and other face masks used in the COVID-19 pandemic. I hope to begin my proposed experiments either fall 2020 or spring 2021. My proposed experiments include an experiment to compare the comfort of fitted respirators such as the N95 and cloth masks used during the COVID-19 pandemic to a cellulose-based mask, and another experiment to evaluate the filtering efficiency of a cellulose-based mask that may be employed in the future.

I spent my summer as an intern at the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) working in the Epidemiology department. I primarily focused on vector-borne disease, but one of the projects I worked on was daily data cleaning for the COVID-19 response. I would go through death data and verify information such as COD before reporting it to the CDC and Governor’s Office.

@jnvncnt_ received a crash course in sustainability in Costa Rica. Plus he met a baby sloth and can your trip really be memorable if you don't meet a baby sloth? . 📸 1: "The first picture was taken en route to a local falls in Limon province where we spent the first 3 days of our spring break trip in Costa Rica. The hike to the falls was only 15-20 minutes, and they require tourists to use rods for balance and safeguarding for the hike! The bridge was only capable of holding a couple of people at a time, so be careful!" . 📸 2: "The second picture was taken in our second lodging place in Orosi Valley, Costa Rica, where you can see the breathtaking view from our hub. A few minutes away from our lodging was where we volunteered at. We cemented a floor in the community center that GlobeAware, our partner, has been working on for the last couple of years." . 📸 3: "Earth University, one of the most sustainable and self-sustaining universities in the world, has a vast forest and a lot of farmlands. Here, you can see me walking behind one of our tour guides, while watching out for snakes, monkeys, and jaguars (they rarely appear). I will never forget when we saw a mama sloth with her lil baby just hanging from a tree 30 feet tall and we were like, 'How’s it hanging?'" . . . . . @ncstate @applyncstate #gspnowboarding #costarica🇨🇷 #travel #limon #earthuniversity #sloth #raleigh #ncstatetransfers #communitycollege #highschool #service #servicelearning
